CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY The Graduated Response System Issues, Benefits and Alternative approach Anik K Singh 8/11/2012 The Graduated Response System INTRODUCTION The growth of internet and its ever increasing pervasiveness has caused extensive digitization of copyrighted content not limited to a single format and subsequently an increase in online piracy. This combined with the advent of P2P file sharing mechanisms as a massive means of infringement practice has led to a paradigm shift in the approach to copyright infringement. Where unauthorized copying of a work was earlier considered a means of increasing a work’s market by stimulating its network effects, it is today seen as an unfair practice, a hindrance to†¦show more content†¦The decentralized nature of these systems meant that each user using the platform is capable of sharing and downloading data, hence each user joining the network would add value to it (Network Effects) which in turn makes the network more attractive to others. To add, most of these systems were open source which led to the development of multiple file sharing clients on each platform. The P2P netw orks saw viral adoption amongst the internet using population of world and as such became a huge repository of copyrighted content available to be shared for free. The popularity of P2P systems can be judged by the fact that † it was estimated that at one point of time 35% of all traffic on the internet was due to Bit Torrent.†[1] The following statistics indicate the effect of the emergence of P2P networks on the music industry [2] 1. In the decade since peer-to-peer (p2p) file-sharing site Napster emerged in 1999, music sales in the U.S. have dropped 47 percent, from $14.6 billion to $7.7 billion. 2. From 2004 through 2009 alone, approximately 30 billion songs were illegally downloaded on file-sharing networks. 3. NPD reports that only 37 percent of music acquired by U.S. consumers in 2009 was paid for. 4. Frontier Economics recently estimated that U.S. Internet users annually consume between $7 and $20 billion worth of digitally pirated recorded music. 5.
